Gophers freshman Tarah Hobbs, who played for White Bear Lake High School, was named the Big Ten goalkeeper of the year. She led the conference in saves with 114 — an average 7.1 per game — and had four shutouts in league play.

Hobbs will need to be at her best when eighth-seeded Minnesota faces Big Ten champion Nebraska at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Champaign, Ill., in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. The Cornhuskers (15-3-1, 10-1-0 Big Ten) earned three major conference awards: Jordan Jackson and Ari Romero were named the midfielder and defender of the year, respectively, and John Walker the coach of the year.

The Gophers (11-6-2, 4-5-2) lost at home to Nebraska 1-0 on Oct. 20. Hobbs had eight saves that game, Minnesota had six shots on net and outshot the visitors 20-16.
