Replay: Michigan 42, Gophers 13

  • Updated: October 7, 2013 - 1:53 AM

The recap: The Gophers trailed 14-7 after holding the ball for almost 19 minutes in the first half, but Michigan pulled away with four second-half touchdowns.

What was learned: Mitch Leidner had two costly turnovers but had an otherwise strong day at quarterback, completing 14 of 21 passes and rushing for 66 yards.

YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED:

• Gophers safety Cedric Thompson and wide receiver Derrick Engel were both being monitored for concussion symptoms after getting shaken up on hits.

• Cornerbacks Derrick Wells (recurring shoulder injury ) and Martez Shabazz (separated shoulder) also left the game.

• True freshman Jalen Myric saw time at cornerback with the secondary depleted. Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys hinted that a safety could be moving to cornerback. Brock Vereen is a candidate, since he has played corner in the past.

UP NEXT: At No. 19 Northwestern

Oct. 19, time TBD, Ryan Field

TV: TBD  • Radio: 100.3-FM

Records: Gophers 4-2, 0-2 Big Ten; Northwestern 4-1, 0-1

The skinny: Northwestern lost a heartbreaker to Ohio State on Saturday and gets another tough test at Wisconsin on Saturday before the Gophers visit Evanston. Minnesota, which has lost its past three games against Northwestern, will be coming off a bye. Northwestern’s loss to Ohio State was closer than the 40-30 score indicates. Trailing 34-30, Northwestern turned the ball over on downs in Buckeyes territory. After getting the ball back, the Wildcats tried to lateral on the game’s final play, and Ohio State pounced on a fumble in the end zone.
