Brigham Young won the men’s Gold race for Division I teams on Saturday in the Roy Griak Invitational cross-country meet at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights.
BYU had 62 points, Colorado State was second with 74 and Arizona State third with 139. The Gophers finished eighth in the 24-team field with 231 points. Their top runner was senior John Simons, who placed sixth in a time of 24 minutes, 33 seconds. The individual winner was Tylor Thatcher of BYU in 24:26.
Arizona finished first in the women’s Gold race with 48 points, followed by Michigan State with 72, Butler with 94 and the Gophers, in fourth, with 104. Seniors Laura Docherty (21:11) and Katie Moraczewski (21:21) led the Gophers, placing 11th and 15th, respectively.
“Overall I was pretty pleased,” Gophers first-year women’s coach Sarah Hopkins said. “People stuck their noses in there and fought really hard. We put five in the top 31, which was great.”
Junior Shelby Houlihan won the 28-team women’s race in 20:36.
Men’s individual and team champions in other races were senior Adam Volkert of Pittsburg State and Augustana (S.D.) in Division II and junior Matt Berens of Bethel and Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Division III.
Senior Runa Falch of Augustana (S.D.) and her team swept the women’s titles in Division II. St. Scholastica senior Chelsea Marie Johnson and Wartburg took first in the Division III women’s race.
In the high school races, Wayzata swept the boys’ and girls’ Gold races. Senior Obsa Ali of Richfield and junior Jordyn Colter of Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Colo.), were the individual champions. Ali’s time of 15:30.8 was the second-fastest ever in the boys’ 5K race. It was also his second Griak title; he won the Maroon race a year ago.
“I just wanted to stay patient and let [my competitors] work,” Ali said. “When we got towards the end, I knew I had the kick to take it.”
Minneapolis Washburn won the boys’ team title and had the individual girls’ winner, seventh-grader Emily Covert, in the Maroon races. Covert won by three seconds in 11:04 over 3K.
About 4,500 runners ran in 10 races in the Griak.
