GOPHERS 43, SAN JOSE STATE 24

The recap: Quarterback Mitch Leidner rushed for 151 yards and four touchdowns, and the defense found a way to stop David Fales, who passed for 294 yards in the first half.

What was learned: The offensive line had its best game of the season, as the Gophers rushed for 353 yards, including 125 by David Cobb, who added two rushing touchdowns.

YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED:

• Cornerback Derrick Wells appeared to hurt his right shoulder on a late-game tackle, but coach Jerry Kill said Wells hadn’t turned up on the injury report.

• Tailback Donnell Kirkwood returned from his sprained ankle injury but was limited to special teams duty.

• Leidner became the first Gophers quarterback to rush for four touchdowns since Curtis Wilson did it against Indiana in 1967. Leidner became their fifth quarterback to rush for at least 150 yards in one game, joining MarQueis Gray, Sandy Stevens, Billy Cockerham and Rickey Foggie.

The skinny: In his 15th year as Iowa’s coach, Kirk Ferentz is trying to reverse a trend. The Hawkeyes’ win totals the past four seasons were 11, eight, seven and four. Mark Weisman averaged 28 carries for 142 yards through three games this year. He rushed 10 times for 43 yards Saturday against Western Michigan. The Hawkeyes built a 38-3 lead by halftime, allowing them to rest Weisman for the second half of an eventual 59-3 win.
