The No. 9-ranked Gophers women's volleyball team won twice Saturday in the Dartmouth Duels in Hanover, N.H.

Minnesota's first match was the toughest. The Gophers beat Connecticut 25-23, 25-19, 16-25, 25-21 Saturday in the Dartmouth Duels in Hanover, N.H.

Seniors Tori Dixon and Ashley Wittman each had double-doubles for Minnesota. Dixon had 17 kills and 12 digs, Wittman 16 kills and 10 digs. This was only the second U match this season that went more than three sets.

In the evening, with Dixon and Wittman resting, the Gophers beat host Dartmouth 25-20, 25-23, 25-20. Freshman Sarah Wilhite had 15 kills and 10 digs while junior Adrianna Nora had 14 kills as the U improved to 12-1.

Sorenson helps U.S.

Rod Perry and Jeff Sorenson, a teaching pro at Columbia Golf Club in Minneapolis, contributed birdies on their last four holes Saturday to win their four-ball match and help the Americans take a 10½-5½ lead over Great Britain and Ireland in the PGA Cup in Hexham, England.

Sorenson made seven birdies in their 3-and-2 four-ball win over Nick Brennan and Gareth Wright.

The PGA Cup, for club professionals, ends Sunday with 10 singles matches.

4 Gophers in net finals

Four Gophers will play in singles flight championship matches on Sunday in the 11-team Gopher Invitational.

Tereza Brichacova will be in the 'M' flight final, Aria Lambert and Jessika Mozia will play each other in the 'U' flight final and Maja Vujic will be in the Gold flight final.

Minnesota players were 6-4 in singles matches Saturday and 5-5 in doubles. None of the Gophers doubles teams advanced to the finals.

• Indiana defeated the Gophers 1-0 in a Big Ten women's soccer opener in Bloomington, Ind. Veronica Ellis scored the Hoosiers' goal in the 70th minute. Tarah Hobbs had nine saves for the Gophers.
