Gophers wide receiver Andre McDonald, who was suspended from preseason camp after violating team rules, won't return to the team this season, Gophers coach Jerry Kill said Tuesday.

"Right now, he's not going to play for us this semester," Kill said. "That's all I'm going to say on that."

McDonald was a highly touted recruit out of Hopkins in 2012, but after starting last year's season opener, he missed time because of a medical issue and got suspended for the bowl game because of a violation of team rules.

He dropped out of school for spring semester and missed spring practice, with the team saying he had to work through a personal issue. He went through summer school and was back with the Gophers for the first two weeks of preseason camp, but now his career is back on hold.

Injury update

Running backs Donnell Kirkwood and Berkley Edwards are both doubtful for Saturday's game because of sprained ankles, but Kill said cornerback Derrick Wells should be ready to return from his shoulder and hamstring injuries. Tight end Drew Goodger injured a knee against UNLV but has continued to practice.

Etc.

Kill said backup running back Rodrick Williams did not play in the first half of the UNLV game because he was late to a team meeting.
