The Gophers women's soccer team beat Toledo 2-1 on Friday in its season opener. Simone Kolander, a freshman forward from Lakeville, scored the winning goal early in the second half.

The game was the second of two in the U's four-team tournament at Robbie Stadium in Falcon Heights. North Dakota State beat Belmont 2-0 in the first game. The Gophers will play NDSU, which won despite being outshot 13-8, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Josee Stiever, a freshman midfielder from Cedarburg, Wis., gave the Gophers a 1-0 lead over Toledo in the 19th minute.

The game's first goal seemed to ignite the Rockets' offense. Toledo had two shots on goal — both stopped by Kristen Knutson — and hit a post over the next 10½ minutes. Kiersten Johnson tied the score for the visitors in the 40th minute.

Knutson, a sophomore from Eagan, finished with two saves for the U. Toledo goalkeeper Sam Tiongson had four saves.

Both Kolander and Stiever had two shots on goal in their college debut for the Gophers.
