Football coach Paul Miller of the University of Minnesota Crookston is taking a leave of absence for medical reasons. Defensive coordinator Mike Fritze, who joined Miller's staff in January, will be the interim head coach.

Fritze coached Apple Valley High School last season. The Eagles were 8-3 and advanced to the state playoffs for the first time since 1993 when they won the big-school state title under Miller.

• Sam Matthew, of Midland Hills Country Club, held a one-stroke lead into final round of the 110th MGA Amateur Championship at Medina Golf and Country Club. Matthew, after two rounds of 70, is at 4-under-par 140.

• Swimmers with University of Minnesota ties earned three medals at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Former Gopher Ashley Steenvoorden took the silver medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle (16:07.89) and the bronze in the 800 freestyle relay. Senior Kyler Van Swol was on the third-place men's 400 medley relay.

• The St. Paul Saints split a doubleheader in Laredo, Texas, losing the first game 4-3 and winning the second by the same score. Willie Cabrera drove in the Saints' winning run with a double in the fifth inning.
