MILWAUKEE — Genaro Armas, who led coverage of the Penn State scandal for The Associated Press and has been the correspondent in State College, Pa., for the past eight years, has been named the news agency's Wisconsin sports writer.

The beat writer for Penn State football, Armas was a lead writer on the Jerry Sandusky scandal that engulfed the university and its athletics program. He also covered college basketball, hockey and auto racing while in State College, and his responsibilities included the Little League World Series in nearby South Williamsport.

In central Pennsylvania, Armas handled other news as well, most recently leading coverage of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Prior to State College, he worked at the AP's bureau in Washington, where his coverage areas included demographics, telecommunications and the 2004 presidential election.

Previous stops in the AP included Philadelphia and Albany, N.Y., where he covered news and sports. Armas joined the AP as an intern in Albany in 1996. He earned a journalism degree from Syracuse University.

The appointment was announced Monday by Dave Zelio, the AP's assistant sports editor for the central U.S. Armas will be based in Milwaukee. His coverage responsibilities will include the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Bucks, Milwaukee Brewers and college athletics at Wisconsin and Marquette.
