Minnesota Scene: Eight Gophers in NCAA gymnastics meet finals

  • Updated: April 20, 2013 - 11:40 PM

Eight University of Minnesota gymnasts — six men and two women — will compete in NCAA meets on Sunday in different parts of the country. Two of them are in two individual events.

The men’s meet is at Penn State. Ellis Mannon of the Gophers is one of the pommel horse favorites. He finished first in that event in the team semifinals on Friday. Also in the individual finals are Justin Morinishi, Sean Bauer and Matt Frey in floor exercise, and Jack Metcalf and Steve Jaciuk on still rings. Jaciuk also qualified on the high bar.

The women’s national meet is at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. The Gophers have two title threats there. Lindsay Mable tied for first place in floor exercise in Friday’s team semifinals and for fourth in vault. Hanna Nordquist tied for second on the balance beam.

Swarm loses finale

Colorado scored five of the six goals in the fourth period and beat the Minnesota Swarm 16-14 on Saturday in a National Lacrosse League game at Xcel Energy Center before an announced crowd of 12,243. The score was 9-9 after three periods.

The victory enabled the Mammoth to clinch a playoff spot, which the Swarm did last weekend by beating Colorado 17-12 in Denver. Both teams finish the regular season with 7-9 records,

Callum Crawford led the Swarm with two goals and four assists. Ryan Benesch had three goals and two assists.

• The Gophers men’s golf team, with a score of 600, is third after two rounds of the Rutherford Intercollegiate tournament at Penn State. Erik Van Rooyen and Tyler Lowenstein have the low score for the Gophers, both at 7-over-par 149.
