Minnesota scene: U.S. beats Finland 4-2 in Women's World Championships

Monique Lamoureux, of Grand Forks, N.D., scored two goals as the United States beat Finland 4-2 on Wednesday in the IIHF Women’s World Championships in Ottawa, Ontario. Amanda Kessel of the Gophers and Brianna Decker had the other two goals for the U.S. team, which was coming off an emotional 3-2 shootout loss to Canada but took a 4-0 lead in the opening period.

Noora Raty made 38 saves for Finland while defenseman Mira Jalosuo had an assist on the Finn’s first goal at 1:11 of the second period. Raty and Jalosuo also played for the Gophers this past season.

U cleans up on awards

• Harun Abda, a Gophers senior from Fridley, was picked the Big Ten men’s track athlete of the week. He ran the fastest time of the outdoor season in the 800 meters (1 minute, 48.62 seconds) at the Stanford Invitational. He also ran on the second place 4x400 relay (3:09.12), which has the conference’s top time.

• The Gophers’ Erik Van Rooyen was the Big Ten co-men’s golfer of the week after tying for ninth place in the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford. The senior from Oudtshoorn, South Africa, shot a 1-under-par 209.

• Sophomore Leandro Toledo of the Gophers was named the Big Ten men’s tennis player of the week. He was 2-0 at No. 2 singles and also won twice with his doubles partner.
