The Gophers women's hockey team, winner of an NCAA-record 38 consecutive games, needs a sweep of Bemidji State this weekend to complete a perfect regular season at home.

The top-ranked Gophers are 14-0 at Ridder Arena going into their games Friday -- Fan Appreciation Night, 7:07 p.m. -- and Saturday -- Senior Day, 4:07 p.m. They have never won every home game of a single season. The closest they came was in 2004-05 when they went 15-0-1.

St. Cloud State wrestlers tie record

No. 1 St. Cloud State (21-0, 8-0 NSIC) defeated No. 8 Minnesota State Mankato (9-3, 6-1) 29-6 in wrestling on Thursday night in St. Cloud.

By winning, the Huskies clinched the conference regular-season championship and tied the NCAA Division II record for consecutive victories at 47.

The victory was also the 100th of coach Steve Costanzo's career at St. Cloud State.

NSIC baseball marathon at the Dome

The NSIC Metrodome Baseball Classic got underway Thursday with three nonconference seven-inning doubleheaders. There will be four doubleheaders daily Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The first doubleheader each day is at 6 a.m. The last one is at 8:15 p.m. See C9 for the schedule and scores.

MIAC swimmer sets league mark

Carleton's Erik Klontz set a MIAC record in the men's 50-yard freestyle on the first day of the conference's swimming and diving championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Klontz won his heat by more than a body length in 19.66 seconds to set the mark. He won the finals in 19.83 to defend his title. He's the first MIAC men's swimmer to break 20 seconds in the event.

Klontz also was part of Carleton's winning 200 freestyle relay team, which set a MIAC record of 1:21.55.

St. Catherine's Steff Jurusik set a MIAC record in the women's 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.92.

The St. Olaf men and the Gustavus women were in first place. The Gusties are trying to win their fourth team title in a row.

The meet continues Friday and Saturday.

Jeff Sauer to coach in Paralympics

Former Wisconsin men's hockey coach Jeff Sauer was named coach of the 2014 U.S. Paralympic sled hockey team, USA Hockey announced.

Sauer, who played high school hockey at St. Paul Washington before guiding the Badgers to two national championships from 1982 to 2002, is in his second season serving as head coach of the U.S. national sled hockey team.

The United States will be defending its gold medal from the 2010 Vancouver Paralympic Games.
