Last update: May 13, 2008 - 2:20 AM

Gophers football coach Tim Brewster announced that wide receiver Tray Herndon, who had 22 receptions for 235 yards and one touchdown last season, was granted a release from his scholarship on Monday.

Brewster also said senior linebacker Steve Davis, junior wide receiver Eric Decker, senior defensive end Willie VanDeSteeg and sophomore quarterback Adam Weber will serve as team captains for the 2008 season.

Brewster also said Tim Cross was promoted to associate head coach. Cross is in his second season with the Gophers and will continue to coach the defensive line.

• Minnesota junior forward Ryan Stoa, who missed all but the first two games of the 2007-08 hockey season (knee injury), has been selected by his teammates as the Gophers' captain for next season. Stoa, of Bloomington, had 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points as a sophomore.

• Gophers senior wrestler C.P. Schlatter has been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-America Team for the third time. He posted a 3.31 GPA during the fall semester as a nursing major.
