The No. 12 Gophers women's gymnastics team pulled off a major upset Saturday, scoring 196.800 to defeat top-ranked Michigan (196.775), No. 20 Central Michigan (194.650) and Iowa State (193.950) at the Sports Pavilion.

This was only the Gophers' third victory over the Wolverines in program history, but their second in a row. Minnesota was third in the Big Ten Championships last year, one spot ahead of Michigan.

The Gophers were led by sophomore Lindsay Mable, who captured the all-around title with a score of 39.450 and was selected as the meet's most vital performer.

Junior Kayla Slechta, who entered the meet tied for first nationally with an average score of 9.938 on vault this season, recorded her second 9.950 on the event to tie for first with Michigan's Sachi Sugiyama. Sophomore Jenny Covers also recorded a career-high on vault (9.900) to finish third.

U men gymnasts win, too

The Gophers men's gymnastics team opened its home schedule with a 430.60-404.75 victory over Air Force. The Gophers won every event. Zach Chase won the vault with a score of 15.30 points. Other winners: Josh Wokurka in floor exercise (15.20), Ellis Mannon in pommel horse (15.10), Jack Metcalf on rings (14.95), Daniel DeBenedetto on horizontal bar (14.70) and Matt Frey on parallel bars (14.50).

Swarm win home opener

The Minnesota Swarm won its home opener in the National Lacrosse League, edging the Washington Stealth 15-14 at the Xcel Energy Center. Captain Andrew Suitor's second goal gave the Storm a 15-12 lead. He scored the goal after injuring his right knee in the fourth period. He was carried off the field but came back.

Three players for the Swarm (1-2) had hat tricks: Ryan Benesch and rookies Kiel Matisz and Shayne Jackson.

Both U tennis teams lose

The Gophers women's tennis team lost 4-2 to No. 30 Arizona (3-0) in its first match at an ITA Kick-off Weekend event in College Station, Texas. No. 41 Minnesota (2-1) won two of three matches for the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, but lost four of the five singles matches that finished. Aria Lambert won 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 at No. 4 singles. ...The men's tennis team lost to Vanderbilt 7-0 on the second day of its ITA Kick-off Weekend in Athens, Ga.
