Gophers women top UND on five third-period goals, now 22-0

The Gophers women's hockey team has not lost this season and had trailed only once before Saturday -- for 39 seconds.

But its long winning streak -- now at 30 games going back to last season -- looked in serious jeopardy on Saturday.

North Dakota and the No. 1-ranked Gophers were tied 3-3 in the middle of the third period at Ridder Arena before an announced crowd of 2,703, and UND goalie Shelby Amsley-Benzie (31 saves) was playing well.

Defenseman Rachel Ramsey broke the tie nine minutes into the final period with the decisive goal in the Gophers' 6-3 victory over North Dakota. Her third goal of the season for Minnesota (22-0-0, 16-0-0 WCHA) came on a low wrist shot from the point.

That final score was the same as the night before, but the Gophers led 5-0 on Friday. The rematch was different.

Jocelyne Lamoureux scored for North Dakota (13-9-0, 8-8-0) two minutes into the game on a power play. It stayed 1-0 UND until Rachael Bona's goal with a man advantage for the Gophers at 9:05 of the second.

The Gophers took 2-1 and 3-2 leads in their five-goal third period, but UND's Michelle Karvinen answered each time on power-play goals, setting the stage for Ramsey.

It remained 4-3 Gophers, who subsequently killed off two UND power plays until the final minute, when junior forward Amanda Kessel scored twice, first unassisted and then into an empty net. Those goals were her 30th and 31st this season. She also had two assists.
