Macalester: Cradle of football coaches robbed again, this time by UMD

Some of you are too young to remember when Macalester College in St. Paul compiled a 50-game losing streak that was an NCAA record and caused some to wonder why the school even bothered with a team. There was the time in 1977 when Mac scored on the first play against Concordia-Moorhead but missed the extra point.
Concordia rallied to win 97-6.
A few decades later, Macalester decided it could no longer compete in the MIAC and often to play an independent schedule. Under coach Glenn Caruso the team started winning a few games, and Caruso attracted enough attention for his work that he was brought in to revive the program a mile down Summit Ave. at St. Thomas, where he has built a team that finished second this season in NCAA Division III.
Now comes word from Macalester that the team's offensive coordinator, Dan Larson, is leaving to become offensive coordinator at Minnesota Duluth, which has a 62-7 record over the last five seasons and has won two NCAA Division II championships. Macalester had a 6-4 record this season.
Larson 33, spent five seasons at Macalester and worked with the new UMD coach, Kurt Wiese, an an Ohio college a few years back.
Larson told Jon Nowacki of the Duluth News Tribune: “A lot of things told me not to take that job at Macalester, but they had a president who wanted to be great in all facets of college. It was a great five years there. A lot of people said you couldn’t succeed, but we just had a different mindset."
