Kangas third freshman to be named Gophers hockey MVP
Goalie Alex Kangas received three awards at the Gophers men's hockey postseason banquet, including MVP.
Kangas became only the third freshman named the team's MVP since the award was first presented in 1955-56. The others were goalie Murray McLachlan in 1967-68 and forward Thomas Vanek in 2002-03.
Kangas was named playoffs MVP and the team's rookie of the year.
Five seniors split the other awards: goalie Brent Solei (most determined), forward Tom Pohl (community service), forward Mike Howe (unsung hero), forward Even Kaufmann (outstanding student-athlete) and defenseman and team captain Derek Peltier (leadership and sportsmanship).
U beats Badgers in softballThe Gophers scored four runs in the top of the 11th inning and beat Wisconsin 4-0 in a Big Ten softball game Saturday in Madison, Wis.
The Gophers (27-15, 8-7 Big Ten) had only two hits in the first 10 innings but got four hits in the 11th.
Gophers pitcher Briana Hassett pitched the complete-game shutout, striking out 15. It was Hassett's 11th shutout of the season, tying her for second on the school's single-season chart.

The Gophers, who advanced all six boats to the Grand Finals, finished with 104 points -- 46 behind first-place Michigan State. Wisconsin (114) was second and Ohio State (112) was third.
Two of the Gophers' First Varsity Eight members were All-Big Ten selections. Coxswain Megan Flannery was named to the all-Big Ten first team, and Jenny Barnes was named to the second team. Captain MaryAnn Weinzierl was named Minnesota's Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree.

The Hawkeyes scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally and win the first game, and Steve Turnbull scattered seven hits to pitch Iowa to victory in the second game.
