The U.S. junior national hockey team trimmed its roster to 24 by cutting Gophers freshman defenseman Brady Skjei and forward Stefan Matteau.

The Americans must make one more cut, but are waiting to see if defenseman Connor Murphy is healthy for the tournament, which begins Wednesday in Ufa, Russia.

The roster includes Gophers freshman defenseman Mike Reilly and Wayzata's Mario Lucia, a freshman at Notre Dame. The team is coached by Stillwater's Phil Housley.

Jake McCabe, a sophomore defenseman for Wisconsin, was named team captain Sunday.

The first game for the U.S. is Thursday against Germany.
