The Gophers women's hockey team broke the NCAA record for most victories in a row Saturday, routing Minnesota State Mankato 9-1 at Ridder Arena for their 22nd win a row dating to last season.

The No. 1-rated Gophers (14-0, 10-0 WCHA) were tied 1-1 with the Mavericks after the first period, but scored four goals in the second and four more in the third.

Amanda Kessel had two goals and three assists for the Gophers, Kelly Terry four assists and Megan Bozek two goals. The hosts outshot MSU Mankato 48-11.

The Gophers' winning streak began Feb. 18 against North Dakota. Harvard won 21 consecutive games in 2008.

U wins in volleyball

The Gophers volleyball team, rated No. 14, routed Iowa 25-13, 25-22, 25-16 on senior night at the Sports Pavilion. Katherine Harms and Tori Dixon led the U with 12 kills apiece. Minnesota (22-7, 13-5) finish the regular season with road matches at Wisconsin and Indiana next weekend.

Harms, one of the seniors honored, hit a match-best .667 and had no errors on 18 swings. Dixon, a junior middle blocker, hit .526.

Wilson era at U ends

The Gophers women's cross-county team finished 22nd in the NCAA meet in Louisville, Ky., in Gary Wilson's last meet as the team's head coach. He is retiring after 28 years. Molly Kayfes, a sophomore from Maple Grove, was the Gophers' top finisher in 78th place.

Twins fill two AAA jobs

The Twins hired former Cardinals bullpen coach Marty Mason as their Class AAA pitching coach at Rochester on Saturday and named former Kansas City T-Bones manager Tim Doherty their hitting coach there.

Mason replaces Bobby Cuellar, who was promoted onto the Twins' major league staff as bullpen coach.
