U rallies in the fifth set to turn back Cornhuskers

It didn't look good for the Gophers volleyball team when it fell behind 7-2 in the fifth set against No. 9 Nebraska on Friday night.

But the 14th-ranked Gophers ran off five points in a row to tie the score, and it was close the rest of the way. They capped the comeback by capitalizing on their fifth match point for a 25-12, 15-25, 22-25, 25-19, 21-19 victory at the Sports Pavilion.

Daly Santana and Dana Knudsen blocked Meghan Haggerty's final attempt, capping a comeback that saw the Gophers dominate the first set but then drop the next two. They also fell behind 4-0 in the third set before bouncing back.

Santana finished with 17 kills and four blocks for the Gophers, and Tori Dixon added 16 kills while hitting .407. Knudsen had only nine kills but had no errors and hit .529 for the Gophers, who hit .287 to the Cornhuskers' .263.

Gina Mancuso led Nebraska with 18 kills. The Cornhuskers led 14-13 and 16-15 in the win-by-two, first-to-15 fifth set, but each time the Gophers tied it up. After tying the score 16-16, the Gophers had match point four times before finally putting Nebraska away.

The Gophers face Iowa on Saturday night, which will be senior day for four players.
