Gophers goalie Adam Wilcox was selected the WCHA Rookie of the Week after getting his second shutout of the season in the U's 4-0 victory over Alaska Anchorage on Friday in the first game of the road series and giving up just two goals -- one on a power play -- in a 2-2 overtime tie in the second game. He stopped 35 shots in the series, 14 in the opener. Wilcox is 5-1-1 overall with a league-leading 1.58 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage, fourth best.

Forward Rylan Schwartz of Colorado College was picked the offensive player of the week and goalie John Faulkner of Nebraska Omaha the defensive player.

U wrestlers ranked third nationally

The Gophers wrestling team is No. 3 in InterMat's tournament-strength national rankings this week, behind Big Ten rivals Penn State and Iowa. Minnesota has individuals ranked in the top 12 at nine of the 10 weights. Its top-ranked wrestlers are junior Tony Nelson, No. 1 and the defending NCAA champion at heavyweight, and sophomore Dylan Ness, No. 3 at 149 pounds.

Etc.

• Kierra Smith of the Gophers was named the Big Ten Swimmer and Rookie of the Week. She placed high in three individual events at the Minneapolis Grand Prix at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. She took first in the 200-yard breaststroke in an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 2 minutes, 8.11 seconds, second in the 200 individual medley and third in the 100 breaststroke. She also swam on the winning 400 medley relay.

• Augustana (S.D.) fired head football coach Mike Aldrich and offensive coordinator Steve Olinger. Aldrich compiled a record of 22-13 in three seasons. He led the Vikings to their best season in school history (11-2) in 2010, but the Vikings lost their final three home games this year and finished 5-6.
