Gophers women edge UMD to stay unbeaten

The No. 1-rated Gophers women's hockey team defeated Minnesota Duluth 4-1 on Friday in a WCHA game at the Bulldogs' Amsoil Arena.

Junior Bethany Brausen and freshman Maryanne Menefee, two forwards, scored goals 30 seconds apart in the middle of the second period to give the Gophers a 2-0 lead. Brausen's goal was her first of the season, Menefee's her seventh.

Menefee scored her second goal of the game 3 1/2 minutes later on a power play to put the Gophers ahead 3-0.

The Gophers (11-0, 7-0) have outscored opponents 68-7 so far. UMD (3-5-1, 2-4-1) split with No. 6 Boston College last weekend.

Jamie Kenyon scored six minutes into the third period for the Bulldogs to spoil goalie Noora Raty's chance for a shutout. Raty stopped 23 shots as did UMD goalie Kayla Black. Defenseman Megan Bozek scored the Gophers' fourth goal midway through the final period on a power play.

• No. 3 Penn State defeated the Gophers 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21 in Big Ten volleyball. Ariel Scott led the Nittany Lions with 20 kills and hit .326. Tori Dixon of the Gophers had nine kills and 11 blocks.

• The No. 13-rated Gophers beat Iowa 165.5 to 132.5 in men's swimming and diving at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Junior Kyler Van Swol of the Gophers won the 100- and 200-yard butterflies. His time of 47.82 seconds in the shorter race was the nation's fastest this season. The No. 12 Gophers women's team crushed Iowa 192 to 103, winning all but two events. Sophomore Tori Simenec won the 200 freestyle and individual medley and anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay.

•The Minnesota Swarm re-signed D Mitch Belisle to a one-year deal.Belisle, 26, had four assists, in 15 games last season.
