Replay: Iowa 31, Gophers 13

  • Updated: September 30, 2012 - 10:50 PM

IOWA 31, GOPHERS 13

The recap: Iowa fullback Mark Weisman romped to 177 yards and Iowa scored three touchdowns in six minutes to hand the Gophers their first loss.

What was learned: Commit four turnovers, as the Gophers did Saturday, and not much else will matter.

YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED:

• The Gophers were the only team in the nation that had not allowed a gain of 30 yards on a single offensive play, but they gave up four such plays on Saturday, including a 45-yard completion to C.J. Fiedorowicz on the second play of the game.

• It was a tough day for Minnesota's true freshmen. K.J. Maye, the backup tailback, lost a fumble. Damarius Travis touched a live punt, though that mistake was overruled when officials determined he had been pushed into the ball. And defensive end Alex Keith was flagged for roughing the passer, a personal foul on third down that extended an Iowa drive.

• The Hawkeyes had more yards of offense by halftime (328) than the Gophers had for the entire game (299). But the Gophers offense outgained Iowa 224-46 in the second half.

• Coach Jerry Kill is 0-5 in Big Ten road games.

UP NEXT: NORTHWESTERN

11 a.m. Oct. 13, TCF Bank Stadium

TV: TBA. Radio: 100.3-FM

Records: Gophers 4-1, 0-1 Big Ten; Northwestern 5-0, 1-0

The skinny: The Gophers take a week off, while the 24th-ranked Wildcats visit Penn State on Saturday, before the two most surprising Big Ten teams meet face-to-face. The Gophers have lost four of their past five meetings, but two of them were by one point. Northwestern beat Syracuse, Vanderbilt and Boston College in the nonconference season and owns the second-best rushing offense in the league.
