U women's hockey team opens title defense with rout of Colgate

Freshman Hannah Brandt recorded a natural hat trick in first collegiate game, and goalie Noora Raty opened the season with a shutout as the Gophers women's hockey team opened its national championship defense with a decisive 7-0 victory over Colgate on Friday at Ridder Arena.

The Gophers outshot the Raiders 49-20 but led only 3-0 after two periods, with Brandt scoring every goal. Brandt scored the team's first goal of the season on a power play at 8:46 of the opening period. She scored on another power play just more than 5 minutes into the second period, and completed the hat trick about 8 minutes later.

The Gophers erupted for four goals in the third period, with two from Becky Kortum, who also had an assist. Mira Jalosuo and Amanda Kessel completed the goal scoring. Milica McMillen and Megan Bozek each had two assists. Raty extended her school record of shutouts to 27.

The teams play again at 4:07 p.m. Saturday at Ridder Arena.

Volleyball team tops Ohio State

The No. 10 Gophers volleyball team defeated No. 22 Ohio State at the Sports Pavilion. By scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22, the Gophers improved to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play.

Minnesota was led by Katherine Harms and Daly Santana with 14 kills each. The 14 kills by Santana tied a career high for the rookie.

Tori Dixon had seven kills, while Alexandra Palmer had a match-high 37 assists. Lindsey Lawmaster added a match-high 11 digs.

The Gophers play host to No. 1 Penn State at 7 p.m. Saturday.


• The Gophers men's golf team is in eighth place after 35 holes of competition at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Invitational tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. Erik Van Rooyen is tied for second individually with a 5-under-par 139.

• The Gophers women's golf team was in fourth place after the opening round of the 37th Nittany Lion Invitational at State College, Pa. Anna Laorr is tied for fifth place individually after tying a career best with a 1-over-par 73.

• Sam Johnson has been appointed interim track and field coach for the men's and women's teams at Concordia (St. Paul)

• Both doubles teams and two individuals on the Gophers men's tennis team, Juan Pablo Ramirez and Tucker Saxon, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia.
