Minnesota will play Louisville in the first basketball game ever at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., in December, stadium officials announced Friday. The Gophers will join Brigham Young, Arizona State and Louisville as the first teams to play in the stadium, which is the home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals and the site of last season's Super Bowl.

The date and time of the event called the Stadium Shootout have not been determined.

Tubby Smith racked up a 6-4 record against Louisville at the University of Kentucky. In his last matchup against mentor Rick Pitino, whose Cardinals play North Carolina today in the Elite Eight, Smith's Wildcats won 61-49 at Louisville.

The matchup against Louisville will enhance Minnesota's strength of schedule and give the Gophers an opportunity to add a quality win to their resume before the conference season begins. Minnesota lost to its two toughest nonconference foes -- Florida State and UNLV -- last season.
