TALE OF TWO QBS

Sophomore Max Shortell took over for MarQueis Gray after the senior quarterback suffered a high ankle sprain in the first half Saturday against Western Michigan. Here is a brief look at the two QBs:

Gray: Passed for 1,495 yards and eight TDs and ran for 966 yards and six scores last season, his first as a full-time quarterback. Through two games this season, he was leading all Big Ten quarterbacks in passing efficiency with a 171.6 rating.

Shortell: More of a traditional pocket passer, Shortell threw 54 passes as a true freshman last season, completing 48 percent. He looked sharp last week in late-game action and on Saturday he rallied the Gophers to a victory with 188 passing yards and three TD passes.
