Hugh McCutcheon began his career as Gophers volleyball coach with a victory, as Katherine Harms had 18 kills Friday in a 25-16, 25-19, 25-16 victory over Long Island-Brooklyn at the Diet Coke Classic at the Sports Pavilion.

Junior captain Ashley Wittman added 14 kills on 17 attempts for a team-high .824 hitting percentage for the Gophers (3-0), who opened the season last weekend while McCutcheon was still away from the team following his stint as the coach of the U.S. Olympic women's volleyball team in London.

The Gophers play twice Saturday, facing Miami (Ohio) at 10 a.m. and Albany at 8 p.m.

• The five-time defending NCAA Division II champion Concordia (St. Paul) volleyball team opened with two victories at the Gangelhoff Center, beating Regis and Brigham Young-Hawaii 3-0. Against No. 20 BYU-Hawaii, Cassie Haag had 14 kills while hitting .520.

Paralympics update

Minnesotans Anna Eames and Justin Zook both qualified for the finals of their first events at the London Paralympics, but both finished last in their S10 50-meter freestyle swimming races.

Summer Mortimer of Canada won gold in the women's race in 28.10 seconds, and Eames finished in 29.41. Eames swam 29.72 in the prelims.

The men's race went to Andre Brasil of Brazil in a world record 23.16. Zook, a two-time Paralympic gold medalist in backstroke events, was last in 26.00 after swimming 25.22 in his prelim.

The other Minnesotans competing Friday were Ian Lynch, who scored three points as the U.S. men's wheelchair basketball team (1-1) beat Italy 77-51; and Rose Hollermann and Sarah Binsfield, whose women's wheelchair team lost to Germany 54-48.

Saints on cusp of elimination

The Saints saw their chances of making the American Association playoffs nearly vanish Friday with their third loss in a row at Gary, this one a 7-4 loss that left them three games behind Winnipeg for a wild-card spot with three games to play.

Mike Massaro hit a tiebreaking two-run single in a four-run eighth inning for Gary, which won the final three games of the four-game series.

The Saints open their final regular-season series at home Saturday night against Wichita.
