Chart: Gophers football practice by the numbers

  • Updated: August 16, 2012 - 10:08 PM

Football teams require lots of resources, and the consumption goes up during two-a-day practices. Some of the numbers:

Practices scheduled by coach Jerry Kill in advance of the Gophers' Aug. 30 season opener in Las Vegas.

Two-a-days, or two practices held the same day, scheduled by Minnesota this year. The NCAA limits the number of two-a-days allowed, and requires at least one day between each.

Number of players allowed on fall camp roster before classes begin Sept. 4.

Meals provided to each player each day during fall camp, including an evening take-home snack (sandwich, yogurt, chips, etc.).

Footballs on hand for use in a normal Gophers practice. An equipment intern checks air pressure and inflates them as needed once a week.

Extra shoes and cleats, of a variety of styles and sizes, kept on hand as backups at every home game and shipped to every road game.

Number of backup pairs of shoes the Gophers used, of those 80, all last season.

Dinner entrees prepared and served each night to the 140 Gophers players and staff members; caterer John Schiltz says most players eat two or three entrees apiece.

Pounds of strawberries consumed, on average, each day at Gophers' salad and fruit bar, roughly six cases' worth.

Pounds of ice used each week by Gophers athletic trainers, for ice packs, ice baths and to chill athletic beverages and water.

Rolls of athletic tape used to brace players' ankles and wrists before each Gophers practice.

Times each player is required to be weighed by a training intern per practice, once before and once after, in order to monitor liquid retention.
