Chuck Merzbacher, a former all-Big Ten Gophers tennis player, has been named the new Gophers women's tennis team's head coach.

Merzbacher has been Ohio State's head women's tennis coach since 1996, and he replaces Tyler Thomson. Thomson, after coaching the Gophers for 11 seasons, moved to the same post at William & Mary.

During his tenure with the Buckeyes, Merzbacher coached his squads to nine NCAA tournament appearances and a total of 209 victories, becoming the winningest coach in program history and leading Ohio State women's tennis to national prominence. Before coaching at OSU, the Findlay, Ohio, native was an assistant for the Gophers for one year, then was head women's tennis coach at Northern Illinois and Kansas.

Etc.

• A walkoff RBI single by Joe Spiers in the 11th inning gave the St. Paul Saints a 4-3 victory over Quebec les Capitales. Saints outfielder Shane Costa, who played for the Kansas City Royals, also announced his retirement.

• The Swarm will hold the three of the four top picks in the first round of the National Lacrosse League's fall entry draft in a deal sending a package of later picks and players Brendon Doran and Shawn Williams to the Buffalo Bandits in exchange for the No. 3 selection, pending league approval. The Swarm already had the No. 2 and No. 4 picks in the first round, along with No. 10.

• Target Center is hosting an Ultimate Fighting Championship card Oct. 5. Heavyweights Travis Browne and Antonio Silva will headline the card, with other bouts announced later.
