David Pachuta and Harun Abda both beat Pachuta's school record in the 800 meters Wednesday but failed to advance from the semifinals of the NCAA track and field championships in Des Moines.

Pachuta crossed the finish line in 1 minute, 46.62 seconds, .03 ahead of Abda. Pachuta's previous Gophers record was 1:46.74, set last month at the Big Ten meet.

Jack Szmanda, the Gophers' school record holder in the decathlon, withdrew after three events -- the 100 meters, shot put and long jump -- because of an ankle injury.

Wagner wins Mid-Am

Minneapolis Golf Club's Kristen Wagner shot a final-round 75 for a two-day total of 151 (9 over par) in defeating defending champion Leigh Klasse of Meadowbrook Golf Club by one stroke for her first MGA Women's Mid-Amateur Championship at Brackett's Crossing Country Club.

Wagner was up by two shots with three holes to play but bogeyed both 16 and 17, and Klasse parred both holes to pull even. Wagner claimed the title with a par on 18 when Klasse made bogey.

Katie Hanneman, Kara Salava and Claudia Pilot rounded out the top five.

Saints fall in Jersey

Angel Berroa and Nick Giarraputo homered in a six-run fourth inning for the New Jersey Jackals in a 9-2 victory over the St. Paul Saints in Little Falls, N.J.

The Saints' starter, Anthony Claggett, was signed after being released by the Somerset Patriots and arrived at the ballpark about an hour before game time to take the turn in the rotation that opened up when Wes Roemer's contract was purchased by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Claggett gave up two third-inning runs, then gave way to Josh Cephas during the fourth-inning rally.

The Saints' Jose Hernandez went 2-for-4 and ran his hitting streak to 14 games.

Etc.

• South Dakota State's Megan Waytashek, a guard who played at Centennial High School, was granted an extra year of eligibility by the Summit League because of time lost to injuries.
