Tommies open World Series with victory

  • Updated: May 26, 2012 - 10:40 AM

The big numbers all added up to a St. Thomas victory.

The Tommies baseball team used 15 hits, nine third-inning runs, eight stolen bases and five errors by Christopher Newport University to win their opening game of the NCAA Division III College World Series 12-7 on Friday in Appleton, Wis.

St. Thomas (39-8) will play a winner's-bracket game Saturday night against defending national champion Marietta, which beat Whitworth 13-2 Friday night.

Steve Maher earned his 13th victory of the season for the Tommies, breaking the season school record set two years ago by Matt Schuld. Maher gave up two runs in the second and two more in the third, but he then retired 11 out of 13 batters in the next four innings.

After spotting the Captains (34-9) a 2-0 lead, the Tommies responded with nine runs in the top of the third off Greg Goldsmith. They sent 13 men to the plate, banging out eight singles and a double; the nine hits were one off the national tournament record. Justin Novak, Ben Podobinski and Tim Kuzniar each had two hits in the inning.

Christopher Newport scored three runs in the ninth inning, but with the bases loaded and the tying run in the on-deck circle, St. Thomas' Tommy Danczyk struck out the final two batters to end the game.

On the men's side, St. Thomas' Mike Hutton won his 800 heat to advance to the finals, while the Tommies' Eyo Ekpo placed 11th in the high jump at 6-8.
