NCAA WEST REGION PRELIMINARY MEET

The Gophers have 23 men in 11 events and two relays and 16 women in the same number of events at the meet, held Thursday through Saturday in Austin, Texas. The top 12 finishers advance to the NCAA meet in Des Moines from June 6-9. Here are the Gophers' best prospects:

Men

• Hammer: Quentin Mege is seeded third, Micah Hegerle ninth

• 800: Dave Pachuta is seeded fifth, Harun Abda eighth

• Decathlon: Jack Szmanda has the fifth-best score

• 4x400 relay team is seeded 10th

• 5K: Hassan Mead is seeded 14th, but placed sixth in the NCAA meet in 2008 and '09

Women

• 4x100 relay team is seeded 11th
