BEMIDJI, MINN. - The Gophers women's hockey team extended two streaks with a 5-1 victory over Bemidji State on Friday afternoon at John Glas Fieldhouse.
The victory, which extended their unbeaten streak to 16 games (14-0-2), was the 20th of the season for the Gophers (20-4-3, 16-4-1 WCHA). It is the 11th consecutive season -- every season since the program started in 1997 -- the Gophers have won at least 20 games.
On Friday, five players scored goals and sophomore forward Brittany Francis contributed three assists for the No. 4-ranked Gophers.
The Beavers (4-20-3, 1-18-2) took a 1-0 lead in the game's first minute when Annie Bauerfeld scored her third goal of the season. It was Bemidji State's fastest goal of the season.
The Gophers' Gigi Marvin tied the game at 11:06 of the first period and Emily West gave the Gophers the lead at 16:36 of the first.
The Gophers scored three goals in the second period -- Kelli Blankenship, Melanie Gagnon and Jenelle Philipczyk -- to take control. Philipczyk's goal -- her third of the season -- was a power-play goal with one second remaining in the period.
The Gophers outshot the Beavers 39-12 and were 2-for-5 on the power-play. Gophers goalie Kim Hanlon had 11 saves as she improved to 11-1-2 on the season.
