MURFREESBORO, TENN. - Tubby Smith is not a candidate for the job vacancy at Tulsa, despite published reports.

Smith gave a statement after Minnesota's 78-72 victory over Middle Tennessee State on Wednesday.

"I'm a candidate for Minnesota," Smith said. "That's it. It's good to hear that sometimes, but it doesn't help with your recruiting and things like that.''

Smith began his NCAA head coaching career at Tulsa and led the Golden Hurricane to the Sweet 16 twice during his four-year tenure.

Smith's name has also come up recently in connection to the South Carolina opening. Outgoing Gophers AD Joel Maturi said he believes Smith will remain at the university.
