Tony Freeman scored 22 points and lowly Iowa stunned No. 6 Michigan State 43-36 on Saturday night in Iowa City, ending the Spartans’ 11-game winning streak.
The Spartans, who were second in the Big Ten in scoring offense, had only 18 points over the final 28:52. Michigan State was averaging 77.7 points, but its 36 points — the lowest total in coach Tom Izzo’s 13 seasons — were just barely half of their previous season low of 63.
The Spartans (14-2, 2-1 Big Ten) went 16-for-52 from the field, made only one free throw and committed 18 turnovers.
Iowa wasn’t much better. The Hawkeyes (8-9, 1-3) made 11 field goals, but that was enough to give coach Todd Lickliter his first Big Ten victory.
Drew Neitzel looked like he might give Michigan State its first lead of the second half when he stripped Freeman and drove to the basket with just over two minutes left. But his layup, like many other Michigan State tries, rolled out.
• Purdue 75, Ohio State 68: Marcus Green has focused on doing the little things for the Boilermakers all season. He saved the big things for the Buckeyes. Green scored 22 points, and his Boilermakers (11-5, 2-1 Big Ten) beat the Buckeyes ended Ohio State’s 19-game Big Ten winning streak.
It was Green’s first double-figure scoring game this season, and he fell one point short of his career high. He fouled out with one minute to play and got a standing ovation as he left the court.
It was the first time this season a Purdue player has scored 20 or more points. Green had been averaging 3.7 points per game. Jamar Butler led the Buckeyes (12-4, 3-1) with 26 points and made a career-high six three-pointers.
• Michigan 78, Northwestern 68: Manny Harris scored 22 points, and the Wolverines built a huge lead before hanging on to beat the Wildcats in Evanston, Ill. The Wolverines ended a five-game losing streak and gave coach John Beilein his first Big Ten victory. Ekpe Udoh added 14 points and 11 rebounds and DeShawn Sims scored 12 for the Wolverines (5-11, 1-3). Northwestern (5-8, 0-4) got a career-high 34-point effort on 14-for-18 shooting from Kevin Coble, playing only his fourth game this season.
