Bemidji State is expected to get a favorable response today when school President Jon Quistgaard asks the WCHA for a scheduling partnership during a meeting at the NCAA convention in Nashville.
The request comes because College Hockey America is shrinking. If nothing changes, it will have only four teams next season — Bemidij State, Alabama-Huntsville, Niagara and Robert Morris.
The proposal the WCHA is considering is a four-year unbalanced schedule that would ensure Bemidji State had 12 games vs. WCHA teams each season, six home, six away.
The 10-team WCHA has had a moratorium on expansion since Minnesota State Mankato was admitted in 1996-97.
• MINNESOTA STATE MANKATO 2, MINNESOTA DULUTH 2: Trevor Bruess scored the tying goal with 2 minutes, 4 seconds left for Mankato (9-8-4, 3-7-4 WCHA). MacGregor Sharp and Josh Meyers scored 17 seconds apart in the first period for the host Bulldogs (8-7-5, 6-6-4).
• WISCONSIN 7, DENVER 2: Kyle Turris scored two goals and the Badgers (9-10-3, 5-8-1) won a conference road game for the first time this season, beating the Pioneers (17-5, 12-4).
• NORTH DAKOTA 4, MICHIGAN TECH 1: Taylor Chorney had a goal and an assist and the Sioux (12-8-1, 9-7) beat the Huskies (9-11-2, 5-8-1) in Grand Forks, N.D.
• COLORADO COLLEGE 5, ALASKA ANCHORAGE 2: Chad Rau scored twice and the Tigers (16-6, 15-3) swept the Seawolves (6-9-5, 2-9-3) in Colorado Springs.
• BEMIDJI STATE 7, ALABAMA-HUNTSVILLE 1: Tyler Scofield had two goals and an assist and the Beavers (11-9-2, 8-7-2 CHA) beat the host Chargers (2-12-2, 0-6-2).
