Newt Loken, a Minnesota native and national champion Gophers gymnast, died from age-related complications on Tuesday at a retirement home in Oregon, leaving behind a notable athletics legacy.

Loken, 92, won the University of Minnesota's first NCAA all-around title in 1942 and was one of only two Gophers to accomplish the feat. Following his career as an athlete, Loken -- who was born in Breckenridge, Minn., and grew up in Minneapolis -- coached gymnastics at the University of Michigan for nearly four decades, winning two NCAA championships and 12 Big Ten titles.

Loken is survived by wife, Dorothy Ann, and four grown children.
