JC quarterback is fifth four-star recruit for U

The Gophers football team received a verbal commitment from four-star quarterback David Pittman of Pasadena City College in California, according to www.GopherIllustrated.com.

Pittman, who visited campus last weekend, is a dual-threat quarterback who could end up playing a different position for the Gophers. He is the fifth four-star recruit in the 2008 class and the sixth junior college player.

Emma Shankland, a diver from Kansas City, Mo., has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Gophers women's swimming and diving team next fall.

• Junior Chris Rombough and freshman Hassan Mead were named co-recipients of the Gophers men's cross- country team's Fred O. Watson Award, given to the Gophers' most valuable runner. Rombough, who also won the award last year, and Ben Puhl were named the captains of next year's squad.

• The Gophers men's hockey team moved up three spots to No. 12 in the USCHO.com/CSTV poll. Michigan moved into the No. 1 spot as Miami (Ohio) fell to No. 2. The Gophers women's team remained No. 5 in the USCHO.com poll as Harvard took over the No. 1 spot.
