Most of Gophers basketball coach Dan Monson's opening remarks at a news conference Friday night dealt with today's season-opening game with Texas-Arlington. Few of the follow-up questions did.
Monson's boss, men's athletic director Mark Dienhart, resigned earlier in the day after an investigative report detailing academic fraud and administrative mismanagement was made public by University of Minnesota president Mark Yudof. Monson, who left Gonzaga in July and replaced Clem Haskins after he resigned under scrutiny, said the move affected him more than his players.
"Mark Dienhart hired me, and he's who I put my trust in to come here," Monson said. "As I told the kids, it's a little bit like me losing my coach, which they've all had to go through. . . . We knew, when the season started, that there was going to be some distractions and that we were going to have to battle through them.
"This has been distracting for me, but I have a responsibility to these kids. As I've said all along, my biggest priority is that these kids have a good experience this year, and what happened today can't be a distraction from that."
