Gophers replay

BOWLING GREEN 32, GOPHERS 31 (OT)

Last update: September 2, 2007 - 11:12 PM

BOWLING GREEN 32, GOPHERS 31 (OT)

Recap: The Tim Brewster Era got off to an inauspicious start as Bowling Green blew a three-touchdown halftime lead but pulled off the upset by converting a two-point conversion in overtime. The Gophers rallied from a 21-0 deficit to take their first lead on Jason Giannini's 33-yard field goal with 2:12 left. But Bowling Green moved the ball quickly downfield and forced overtime on a 35-yard field goal by Sinisa Vrvilo with three seconds left. Both teams scored a touchdown in OT, but the Falcons won on a two-point conversion pass from Tyler Sheehan to Freddie Barnes.

UP NEXT: MIAMI (OHIO)

When: 11 a.m. Saturday, Metrodome

TV, radio: Big Ten Network, 830-AM

Records: Miami 1-0; Gophers 0-1

The skinny: Miami defeated Ball State 14-13 on the road in its opener. The RedHawks are not expected to contend for the Mid-American Conference title, but then again, neither is Bowling Green. Miami senior quarterback Mike Kokal will try to test the Gophers secondary. Minnesota looked like a completely different team in the second half Saturday, but it will have to address some issues in the secondary, especially its tackling.

BIG TEN SNEAK PREVIEW

NOTRE DAME AT NO. 17 PENN STATE

When: 5 p.m. Saturday

Records: Notre Dame 0-1, Penn State 1-0

The skinny: Notre Dame throttled Penn State 41-17 last season, but that feels like a long, long time ago. The Fighting Irish have a mess at quarterback and many questions in the wake of an embarrassing 33-3 home loss to Georgia Tech. Penn State tuned up for the meeting by smashing Florida International 59-0.

On edge

Nobody -- probably not even some Appalachian State players -- thought Michigan would lose to the team from the former Division I-AA. But it did, and fans are in an uproar in Ann Arbor. It promises to be a long week for coach Lloyd Carr and his players. The Wolverines better respond in a big way at home against Oregon, or this thing could really turn ugly.
