The drive to The Bluffs at Coffee Mill (formerly known as Coffee Mill Golf and Country Club) in Wabasha, Minnesota, can be a long one from the Metro area, but the course is easy to find and the views along the way are amazing. When we drove into the parking lot, we were awed by the perfectly manicured fairways and the beautiful clubhouse.
This course was built in 1966 as a nine-hole course and expanded to 18 in 2003. The course's layout is wonderful. With the putting green next to the 1st tee, it's convenient to warm up while waiting for your tee time. The driving range is somewhat short but more than adequate. Well-marked signs at every tee box lay out the hole so you can see what obstacles are waiting. Distances to the various hazards are also marked, making club selection much easier. The fairways are tight in some areas, so losing balls may be a common occurrence. But we don't think anyone would mind losing a few balls on this scenic golf course. The beautiful bunkers surrounding the greens are actually fun to hit out of-the sand is soft and well-raked. The bent-grass greens hold most of the shots extremely well; they gave us the feeling of a much more expensive course. Yes, they were fast! The bunkers combined with the beautiful water features make each hole unique and special. Shooting a good score is possible here if you can avoid the lost balls.
The gas-powered carts are loud; electric carts would be much more desirable in this setting. The cart paths are excellent throughout the course. We saw the beverage cart two times, but in fairness, it was a cooler day. The course's restaurant has everything from sandwiches to steak and chicken, plus an excellent salad bar. The food is very good with reasonable prices. There is a fantastic deck overlooking the 18th green. Did we mention the excellent views on this course? Hanging around after your round is easy. Catering is also available for special events. Make this course a priority on your list of courses to play. And with all the river towns nearby, there are many fun stops for your way home. You will not be disappointed with Coffee Mill.
