Rose Lake Golf Club is located just east of Fairmont, Minnesota, on a quiet country road. The course opened with nine holes in 1957 and additional nine were added in 1987 by Joel Goldstrand. The course uses three sets of tees, ranging from 5222 to 6177 yards.
The course is walkable, but there is only one restroom on the course. Beverage carts are used only on special occasions.
The clubhouse looks like an old farmhouse and we were greeted by a friendly person at the register. The pro shop was well equipped and reasonably priced. The putting and chipping greens are next to the parking lot. The driving range is a quarter-mile away-but the coin-operated machine to get range balls is next to the clubhouse. For golfers who would like to hit more than one bucket, this is a little inconvenient.
Only the 150-yard markers are visible from the tee box. The fairways are lined with mature trees. The well-positioned greens are nestled in among the trees and lakes, which make for a picturesque and natural beauty. A few deer and ducks complete the view. The country road the course borders does come into play on holes 1, 5, 10 and 11 and could result in some penalty strokes if you stray out of bounds. Water comes into play on #5. Number 6 is a beautiful par 4 that narrows to a small green below a tree-covered hill and a lake on the right. Following is an uphill par 3 that can play longer or shorter, depending on the wind. Number 11 is the hardest hole with water on the left and middle and out of bounds on the right. On this hole, the back tees are actually easier to play than the middle tees. The 13th hole is a par 3 over water with an easy drop zone. The 18th is elevated with a two-tier green.
The restaurant has everything from hot dogs to steaks, pizza to desserts. There is also a full-service bar. Prices are very reasonable and the food was great. The course was fun and a challenge to play. The weekly green fee is a little steep for the area, but we would play this course again.
