A short drive southwest of St. Cloud is all that's necessary to find Rich Spring Golf Course, located in Cold Spring, Minnesota. This par-72 course plays 6564 yards from the blue tees, although like most players, we choose the whites. Parking was sufficient even on a beautiful busy weekend.
For any forgotten equipment, the clubhouse was full of merchandise and the staff was very pleasant. Also within the clubhouse is the Lakeview Bar and Grill. It has grill food, a soup and salad bar, as well as full entrees with nightly specials., complete with indoor and outdoor seating. Both the driving range and putting green are conveniently located. Even though there were two different events going on, the staff was friendly and organized. On-course service was attentive without being annoying.
The course is situated on a chain of lakes and some holes have nice views of the neighboring waterways. It is a very forgiving course off most tee boxes. However, tree-lined fairways demand more accuracy from approach shots. Don't be fooled-there are plenty of challenges. Water comes into play on several holes, as do bunkers. The course was nicely manicured and the greens played true, despite heavy traffic. The par 3s were challenging, averaging around 170 yards in length. Number 6 was a favorite hole, requiring a carry over water and past bunkers guarding the front of the green.
It was obvious how much pride the owners have for their course. Tee boxes were nicely landscaped with beautiful flowers and attractive signage. Team Hacker would recommend a cart because some tee-to-green distances are sizeable. At $32 for a weekend green fee, Rich Springs is a nice value. Setting a tee time by phone or online is easy. The website is very informative and has pictures of each hole, although the photos don't always do them justice. This course has something to offer for everyone. If you are in the Cold Spring area, give this course a try-you won't regret it. We had fun and hope to play it again.
