Nestled inside the community of Monticello, a short drive just northwest of Minneapolis, lies an eighteen hole country club, comprised of local members (course is still open to the public), who take great pride in their community golf course. Monticello Country Club measures about 6,500 yards from the blue tees.
The course is set as a traditional parkland design with narrow fairways lined with trees. Good distance markers highlight the course but it could use some additional directional signing between greens and tee boxes as golfers, not familiar with the course, can get lost trying to find the next hole.
The clubhouse has a bar/grill with the pro shop located below. The pro shop has an ample supply of accessories and apparel to meet any golfer's needs.
Cart paths are decent but in some areas, are not visible or are slightly rough. There are plenty of water stations to keep cool and flowers that decorate the tee boxes. The fifth hole is definitely a signature hole with a sharp left dogleg that includes a swamp, pond and creek as part of the layout. On the back side, #14 is also a signature hole with a pond to the left and woods on the right plus a very narrow fairway; tee boxes are well manicured. There are bunkers that come into play but not to an extreme. Many of the greens are small and round shaped but pin placements are interesting and can be difficult. Some greens have unique designs but all in all, are basic golf greens. A few roughs are left long so if a ball travels there, it may be lost. Beverage cart service with a friendly staff is available on both sets of nines. There is a good-sized driving range adjacent to the course to give golfers plenty of opportunity to practice or to warm up before a round. Restrooms, both off and on the course, are plentiful and clean.
League and tournament play is big at Monticello for both men, women and couples. An experienced golf professional is available to provide golf lessons to persons of all skill levels. Monticello Country Club is recommended as a course golfers can feel like they are at home. It's comfortable, affordable, challenging and worth the drive up I-94 on any day or on the way up north to the lake cabin. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!
