Little Crow Country Club, just west of Paynesville, Minnesota, is easy to find. Set in the heart of New London-Spicer's beautiful lake region, the golf course is one of west central Minnesota's premier public courses. It has 27 holes and a big pro shop and restaurant. The pro greeted us and was extremely friendly and pleasant.
The pro shop has a big selection of not only men's merchandise, but also a lot of women's, and a lot of it was on sale the day we were there. The club has normal snack stuff (hot dogs, chips, etc.), but the restaurant was closed for a private party, though the menu looked good and prices are reasonable. Fortunately there are water coolers and pop machines on the course.
The cart paths are paved and well marked, but we were confused at times because some of the 27 holes cross each other. The paved paths end in wide Ts after the tee boxes, so there are not the usual bare spots of dead grass at the end of them. The tee boxes are very nice looking. There are ball washers, benches, trash cans, etc., on all tees including the forward tees. Also, the yardage markers (250, 200, 150 and 100) are very visible stakes on both sides of the fairways. Some of the sprinkler heads are also marked with yardage. The sand is not the usual sand: it is fine and quite nice to get out of on the first try. (It's hacker friendly!) One of the bunkers was full of animal tracks-maybe deer. We couldn't quite figure out whether or not to rake that one. Everything at Little Crow appears to be very "green."
The trash cans are marked for recyclables, both plastic and cans. There is a lot of league information on the bulletin boards, and even though it was not busy on the day we were there due to the late season, it looked like the course was usually pretty busy with leagues and other golfers. Overall we couldn't find anything wrong with Little Crow. The greens are very nice, fairways are plush, the course seems walkable, and it's scenic. It has a very friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
