Giants Ridge, located just outside of Biwabik, Minnesota, is a destination for both skiiers and golfers alike. After receiving critical acclaim for The Legend, Giants Ridge matched its first endeavor by building the equally magnificent Quarry in 2003.
Minnesota's Iron Range is home to some of the some of the best golf courses in the state. The Quarry is a majestic golf course that embodies the spirit and native topography of the region. Its fairways curve along narrow valleys that cut through jagged rocks and evergreen trees. To conquer this terrain, golfers must be prepared to cut, chop and blast their way through, just as the pioneers did almost 200 years ago. The Quarry is more playable than the other Giants Ridge course, The Legend, but there is little solace in that fact. This is still a very difficult course that is littered with crags, sand traps, rolling mounds and waste bunkers. Likewise, the rippled and multi-tiered greens are fascinating and punishing.
The Quarry also highlights northern Minnesota's lakes and rivers, but much of the water on this course is aesthetic rather than imposing. The signature element and predominant challenge at The Quarry are its pocketed fairways. Nearly all of the fairways are at some point interrupted by unplayable rough, splashes of rock or large waste bunkers. These features require accurate and precise shots at the golfer's peril. The Quarry is an amazing golf experience that will test your patience and fortitude.
The course is a bit spendy, but everything is included in the fee making this a top-notch experience that you'll want to try at least once a summer.
