Fiddlestix Golf Course is three miles south of Lake Mille Lacs in Isle, Minnesota, and it seems a little out of place there. You would expect the attractive clubhouse with its full-service restaurant and bar and the carefully groomed golf course to be just as comfortable in the Gull Lake area.
This is like a secret that the folks on Lake Mille Lacs want to keep to themselves. In spite of the flat farmland that surrounds it, The Stix is what we hackers like: a challenge that we can overcome on our best days.
Trees, ponds and sand abound. Twelve of the holes have some water, and several trees are in very uncomfortable positions at the edges of the fairways, with their boughs filling the air space that is desperately needed on those errant shots. Nature surrounds you at The Stix. We even had to yield the right- of-way to a doe and her fawn as they took their time foraging around the 3rd green. It is near futile to tell a hacker that they should lay up or skirt hazards and aim for the fat part of the fairways and greens, but that is exactly what you need to do here. With some intelligent play it is very easy to shoot bogey.
Most impressive at this course is the care given by the grounds crew. Bunkers are raked and clear of rocks. Fairways are well groomed and the rough (our fairway) is kept at a playable length. The greens are carefully cut and the man on the mower has a plunger to repair the ball marks left by some of our in- considerate friends. Course signage and cart paths are in good condition (we only got lost once), and the tee boxes are also well attended. There is some leg power involved if you are walking. Although the course is relatively flat, there are some significant green-to-tee walks. The long trek from the club- house to the 1st tee was enough to make us glad we were riding. There are a lot of specials available, but even the standard rates are reasonable for this course. All in all, The Stix is well worth the drive. It is a championship course that is interesting, attractive and fun to play.
