Cedar River Country Club is located off State Highway 56 in Adams, Minnesota. This southeastern part of the state seems quiet and laid back, and the course follows suit. It was not too busy the day we were there, and the staff was very friendly. The parking is great, and both the putting green and the driving range are nearby, so you do not have to go far to get warmed up.
The clubhouse is very inviting, but the pro shop is small and has only a few apparel items for sale. The food is standard: hot dogs, burgers, pizza, soda and beer. They do not have a golf pro here at Cedar River, so lessons are not avail- able. But the overall experience of the clubhouse is great.
We thought the layout of the first few holes was boring, but as we got farther into the course, we discovered some truly beautiful holes. There are some tight fairways lined with trees that will suck your golf ball in, never to be seen again. Hole #9 is fun to play, as the approach to the green is just in front of the clubhouse. The rough around that green is pretty difficult to hit from and makes for a tougher-than-average 3rd or 4th shot. There are also some hid- den water hazards that come into play throughout the course. The fairways are in good condition but the tee boxes are a bit worn--full of divots and not very attractive. We were pleasantly surprised with the condition of the greens. They are not super fast, but they do hold a ball nicely and are mowed to a good length.
The signage on the course is not great, and getting from one hole to the next is sometimes cumbersome and frustrating. There are also no cart paths to speak of. The gas-powered carts work well, though. It seems that Cedar River is more of a social hangout than anything, as they have regular card-playing days in the clubhouse. The course is okay--if you live in the area it is certainly worth playing. The prices are good, and walking this course is a definite option. We had a nice time with the locals and the staff, and we came away with a good feeling overall.
