Phil Mickelson stopped by Hazeltine National long enough Wednesday morning to shoot a 3-under-par 69 during a shotgun event for members and guests. He started on the sixth hole and had four birdies, including an approach shot to within three inches on the par-4 10th and a third shot from the rough to within an inch on the par-5 15th.
Mickelson brought his longtime caddie, Jim Mackay, but it was 22-year-old Mike Young, a graduate of Chaska High and the University of Minnesota, who carried the bag while sharing some of the local knowledge he's developed as a caddie at Hazeltine the past 10 years.
"He was a great guy to be around, joking and having a good time with everybody," Young said. "They talked a lot about strategy and asked me questions about distances. It was a lot of fun because he's obviously one of the best golfers in the world."
Mickelson has been away from competitive golf since the U.S. Open as his wife, Amy, and mom, Mary, battle breast cancer. He will return next week at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and then play the 91st PGA Championship the following week at Hazeltine.
