Keep that card

Li Haotong: Li, a 21-year-old from China, soared to third place and the clubhouse lead, birdieing the last four holes and becoming the fourth man to shoot 63 in the final round of the Open. His playing partner, two-time Open winner Ernie Els, in comparing it to Branden Grace's 62 on Saturday, said "It's not the same number, but it's the same quality golf." Li also earned a trip to the Masters.

Toss that card

Dustin Johnson: His round imploded quickly, starting with a double-bogey 6 on No. 1 and adding six more bogeys against a lone birdie on the way to a 77, dropping him from 5 under to 4 over and a tie for 54th.

On the course with …

Rory McIlroy: His run of majors without a victory reached 10, but he finished Sunday with a 3-under 67 — his third straight below-70 round. His next attempt to end that drought will be at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, where McIlroy has won twice. "I love the golf course," he said. "I know they've made a few changes, but I'll have some really good vibes going into that week."

British Open moment

Spieth was pumped after his long-distance bogey save on 13, and the extra bounce on his step was evident when he nearly aced No. 14 and, after draining a 50-foot eagle bomb on 15, Spieth pointed to his caddie and said — in his best old-school fashion — "Go get it."

Chip shots

• In the 10 British Opens held at Royal Birkdale, Spieth is the only player to shoot four rounds in 60s.

• Austin Connelly, the 20-year-old Texan in his first major, began the day tied for third and shot 73, tying for 14th. He could have earned a trip to the Masters with a top-four finish and a return to the Open Championship had he stayed in the top 10.

• Justin Rose closed with a par-70 and finished 4 over at the course on which he debuted as a 17-year-old amateur in 1998. "It would be a dream to win here, but this course doesn't owe me anything, right?" Rose said.

Key hole: No. 13

Yardage: 503

Par: 4

Stroke average: 4.2

Rank: 3

Key fact: Spieth put in a lot of legwork before he found a way to make bogey after taking an unplayable off a sand dune and hitting his third shot from the driving range. Matt Kuchar made a routine par.

Quote of the day

"That's the greatest bogey I've ever seen by a mile. I hope I never see one that great again, because that was stressful."

— Michael Greller, Spieth's caddie, after Spieth's bogey save from an adjacent driving range on No. 14.

Tweet of the day

"Before boarding his plane, Jordan Spieth had 1 last piece of business, with his 2016 Masters demons"

— Ian_O'Connor

Next major
